American Shaun White defended his Olympic title in the men's halfpipe at the Vancouver Olympics on Wednesday, with Japanese medal hopeful Kazuhiro Kokubo paying for a faulty landing on a double cork to finish in eighth.

''If you can't land the double cork, you're finished,'' said 2007 world silver medalist Kokubo, who was recently in hot water for the way he wore Japan's official Olympic uniform on his way to Vancouver. ''But I was able to show my style, so I have no regrets,''.

Finland's Peetu Piiroinen took the silver and American Scott Lago the bronze, with Japan's Ryo Aono finishing one place behind Kokubo.

It was a similar story on the speed skating track, with American Shani Davis winning his second straight gold in the 1,000 meters in 1 minute, 8.94 seconds, while Japan's best was a 17th-place finish by Tadashi Obara 1.57 behind. South Korea's Mo Tae Bum added silver to his 500-meter gold, while Chad Hedrick of the United States took the bronze.

Teruhiro Sugimori and Ryohei Haga finished 26th and 29th, but the biggest surprise was the sight of 500-meter silver medalist Keiichiro Nagashima slumping to 37th in the 38-man field.

Japan's Yuichi Onda was eliminated in the quarterfinals and finished 17th overall, while Madoka Natsumi also fell at the same stage, finishing 27th in the women's 1.4-km, won by Norway's Marit Bjoergen.

Earlier in the day Lindsey Vonn produced a faultless run in the alpine downhill to win gold for the United States, with compatriot Julia Mancuso taking silver and Austria's Elisabeth Goergl bronze.
