CHINA -- Selectmen declined to act on an open space committee's request that they establish a separate Thurston Park committee and appoint its members.

With only four board members present, Joann Austin's motion to create the committee died for lack of a second.

The issue is likely to be revisited.

The action followed an hourlong discussion about whether selectmen should proceed with selective cutting on the approximately 400-acre park in China, as recommended in Albion forester Vite Vitale's management plan; or else seek a more comprehensive management plan.

There was agreement replica breitling that Vitale's is a good forestry management plan. But Austin and others think he should have been asked to pay more attention to other goals, especially recreation and wildlife habitat. Austin consequently opposes immediate action on Vitale's plan.

South China forester Richard Morse reminded selectmen they cannot completely abandon selective cutting and other forestry management practices without losing the park's certification as a tree farm.

A tree farm plan -- unlike a plan for land set aside under the state's Tree Growth tax program -- does not need to have forest management as its only objective, but management must be one objective, Morse said.

Morse agreed with those saying there is no need to cut timber this winter.

Vitale's plan "is flexible enough so you can delay things while you think about it," he said.

Morse; Tim Basham, who is a logger, forester and woodlot owner; Vassalboro resident David Jenney; and others urged selectmen to get a revised plan if they think they need one.

Jenney, active in the Small Woodlot Owners Association of Maine, recommended they ask Vitale to do the revised plan, after they clarify its goals.

An offshoot of the debate is that China has apparently lost the free services Concord Watch Replica of Sappi consultants Howard Charles and Katie Cousins.

During a Jan. 4 public discussion, resident Al Althenn alleged that Charles and Cousins could not give the town unbiased advice, because they were bound to reflect their employer's interests.

Replica Blancpain

Town Manager Daniel L'Heureux received a telephone call from Cousins afterward. As he recalls, she said she and Charles felt the town would make better progress with an independent forester.

L'Heureux did not know whether Cousins had read his email expressing regret for Althenn's comment before she made the call.

Morse and board Chairman Irene Belanger agreed loss of Sappi's services costs the town in expertise and in money, since selectmen will have to hire someone to oversee work that Sappi would have supervised for free.

The main item on Monday's agenda was continued review of L'Heureux's draft of the 201011 municipal budget.

Board members ran out of time, and scheduled a special meeting for 6 p.m. Jan. 25, to finish.

L'Heureux said the budget he prepared shows a few increases and a few decreases.

It will not affect the town's tax rate, he said, although the school budget and the county tax, which selectmen do not control, are likely to increase local taxes.

Byline: Derek Brown

Leamington .................................... 2 Farnborough ................................... 3 BATTLING Leamington suffered the ecstasy and the agony against runaway leaders Farnborough in a thrilling dingdong battle at The New Windmill Ground where Paul Holleran's charges surrendered their four-match winning home run while the visitors somewhat fortunately stretched their unbeaten away record to 13 games.

All the goals came in the second half, in which Boro's Simon Wormull and Kezie Ibe netted inside a six-minute spell around the hour mark but Paul Holleran's charges rallied in great style to deservedly restore parity through Luke Corbett and a Wormull Ciardini own goal.

However, as Brakes sensed a winner, it was the Hampshire men who grabbed the points in the last minute with substitute Andre McCollin their matchwinning hero.

Holleran said: "We can take lots of positives from that performance, and we certainly didn't deserve to lose. It was a good open game and we played well in the first-half, but were a little flat after the break.

"But full credit to the lads, the fresh legs that came on helped us get back into the game and once we'd made it 2-2, there only looked like there was going to be one winner. We had chances to go ahead but never took them and then we got caught with a sucker punch.

"It would have been nice to have kept our little unbeaten run going, but I guess it wasn't to be. Fair play, their winning goal came about through a wonderful cross and finish, but from my point of view, I wasn't overly impressed with our defending for it.

"We've conceded five goals in our last two home games now, and we need to iron out that snag as soon as possible."

Early on, Scott Lycett's long throw-in skidded off Boro's James Smith's head, forcing keeper Mike Jordan to save low down while his opposite number, Carl Pentney, had to be alert to foil Craig Braham-Barrett's 15-yard snap shot.

Leamington were denied the lead on 26 minutes when Jordan fumbled Luke Corbett's downward header and Matt Lewis lunged forward to slide the ball into the net only for inconsistent referee Guy Stretton to harshly rule it out for dangerously play on the Rado Watches keeper.

An entertaining opening period ended with Corbett's excellent volley from James Husbands' corner kick grazing the bar.

Early in the second period Corbett's inswinging free kick was narrowly missed by strike partner Lewis with the net beckoning.

Pentney brilliantly turned aside Nick Ciardini's rising drive before Boro broke through on 58 minutes. Wormull's 25-yard free kick flew past the defensive wall and though Pentney pushed the effort aside, the ball went in off the post. The table-toppers strengthened their grip on 64 minutes with Bubb beating two men in midfield and then releasing Ibe, who coolly slotted past the exposed Pentney.

But Brakes responded and on 67 minutes Corbett dispossessed Adam Doyle and fired wide of Jordan from a tight angle and on 81 minutes they were back on terms as Husband's corner spiralled off the head of Wormull and into his own net.Against the run of play, Farnborough pulled the trigger on 89 minutes as Wormull made amends with a great cross that found substitute Andre McCollin who confidently headed past Pentney with the home defence in complete disarray.

Brakes: Pentney, Lycett, Husband, Jackson (Be

We have a picture hanging on a wall at home painted by Roger Fry about the time of the first world war and entitled 'Pruning Trees'. He portrays two men, one of whom is cutting off a very large bough from an apple tree, while the other is pulling the bough with a rope. Every winter, before I go out into the orchard to do my own apple pruning, I study it carefully, since I feel I need to remind myself what a highly regarded activity pruning has always been. I expect this is because it is a physical activity, like sex and cricket, which largely depends for its success on what goes on in the head.

I cannot think of many gardening activities which demand quite such a range of cerebral attributes, such as good spatial awareness, visual discernment, and aesthetic sense, as well as a grounding in basic botany, entomology and plant pathology. It is helpful, of course, also to have patience, forbearance and a muscular forearm, but carefully thinking Fake Rotary through what you are doing matters more.

The very word 'pruning' puts gardeners in a spin. But it would be hard to argue that these characteristics are not common to many keen gardeners, and all that is often lacking are experience and confidence. And they should know that even professional gardeners admit to going back to the books Zenith Replica Watches from time to time to check the precise way to prune a particular plant, especially if pruning also encompasses training against a wall.

No doubt Roger Fry's pruners were hired men, and may well have grumbled at the cold, the long hours and the poor pay. But for private gardeners, like you and me, winter pruning of apple trees should be one of the most pleasurable of garden tasks, from the moment you pile on the clothes on a crisp morning and then take the tools out of the shed. Pocket knife, secateurs, 'Grecian' curved saw and loppers have been developed and refined over centuries, to the point where it is hard to imagine they could be improved upon. Knowing that you are at the end of a long, respectable tradition is a pleasure in itself.

Successful fruit pruning depends on appreciating fully why you do it at all: namely, to promote healthy, balanced growth and good flowering and fruiting. To do that, you need to understand a basic feature of most plants, namely the propensity to 'apical dominance'. This is a fancy phrase for the imperative urge of a bud on a shoot to break into growth, if the shoot is cut just above it.

Chloe Handags Replica

Plant hormones encourage the apical bud to 'break', while suppressing the 'axillary' buds below it. So we can control where buds break (to a great extent, at least) by being very precise where we make our cuts.

The other thing you need to know is that 'hard' pruning (by which we mean drastic pruning that removes a great deal of the growth that was made the year before) encourages vigorous growth the following season since, in woody plants, roots are roughly in balance with the top growth.

Cutting back hard the end of shoots, therefore, means that what is left will be encouraged by root activity to grow strongly.

Armed with this information, and a copy of a comprehensive manual like the illustrated RHS Pruning and Training by Christopher Brickell and David Joyce, you might just find that pruning apple and pear trees becomes one of the more compelling reasons to spend time outside in the winter garden. Think about it.

Roundup: Plushenko closer to defend Olympic title after short program (updated)

VANCOUVER, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Defending champion Evgeni Plushenko of Russia nailed a quadruple toe-triple toe combination to lead the men's figure skating after Tuesday's short program, getting closer to double his Olympic title.

Glashutte Watch Replica

The 27-year-old, who stormed to the top podium of figure skating in Turin 2006 after having claimed a silver in his first Olympic outing in Salt Lake City in 2002, scored 90.85 points after starting the 10th out of 30 skaters and executing a clean combination of quad- triple toeloops, which was followed by a string of triple jumps.

Plushenko, who came out of retirement in the fall of last year, was the only skater to complete a perfect quad on Tuesday evening, through his score was a little bit less than the season best of 91.30, which was set by himself last month in the title-winning European championships.

"It may not be the best, but I'm satisfied with my jumps," said Plushenko in the overcrowded Pacific Coliseum Replica Movado Watch mixed zone. "I skated not bad. I can take any result. The third or the second will all be fine to me."

"Everybody is saying 'you must, you must'. I was warming up and I saw myself on the TV and the rankings (of Russian athletes)...There is a lot of pressure," he added.

Turin Olympic silver medalist Stephane Lambiel of Switzerland and Sweden's Adrian Schultheiss also included a quad-triple in their routines, but Lambiel, who's the fifth after the short program, staggered while landing and Schultheiss failed to perform it.

Reigning world champion Evan Lysacek was the second on 90.30 with a flawless performance, which further confirmed the 24-year-old to be one of the hottest favorites to stop Plushenko from becoming the first Olympic title defender of men's figure skating in 58 years.

"To mimic what Evgeni said, this just sets us up for the main event. I'm happy tonight, but I'm going to put it out of my mind and conserve my energy for the long programme (free skating)," said Lysacek at a post-match press conference.

Japan duo Daisuke Takahashi and Nobunari Oda were temporarily the third and fourth with 90.25 and 84.85 respectively as their compatriot Takahiko Kozuka sit on the distant eighth with 79.59.

Home favorite Replica Citizen Watches Patrick Chan came out the seventh after scoring 81.12, behind Johnny Weir of the United States on the sixth with 82.10.

"This is the Olympics, you can't afford footing mistakes," said Chan, a Chinese-Canadian, who was the runner-up in the 2009 world championships at an age of only 19. "I think I was a little slow today. I lost some of the speed. That's what caused the time deduction."

The Olympic men's singles title will be decided on Wednesday when the more heated free skating contentions are on show at the Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver.

COACH Rob Lewis has warned rising star Sam Atkin not to get caught up in a "dogfight" for top spot at the National Cross Country Championships.

Atkin, from Healing, lines-up in the Under-17 men's event today at Roundhay Park, Leeds.

He heads into the race having won the Northern Counties Cross Country Championship last month.

It was a superb win for the 16-year-old, who is on the road back to full fitness following a foot injury last year.

In Leeds, the Lincoln Wellington athlete will face the best the country has to offer over the six-kilometre course.

The key contender for the gold medal is Richard Goodman, of Shaftesbury Barnet, and is one that Lewis has already warned Atkin about.

"Richard Goodman is running very well and I've told Sam not to get caught up in a dogfight with him," he explained.

Rotary Watches

"Sam's doing well at the moment and heads into the event in good shape. I'm optimistic that he can do well.

"We've had a chat already about who the main competition will be, but it will be crucial that he runs his own race and does not get caught up in it all.

"When he won the Northern Counties he was a clear winner and made his move to the front with about a mile to go.

"The lad in second place was chasing him down and was able to take a lot of time off him over the last bit of the course - but people know you will push yourself if you are chasing. It is much harder to run from the front."

Goodman DKNY Replica is likely to be the one everyone will be chasing this weekend.

The 16-year-old won the Southern Cross Country Championship at Parliament Hill in London at the end of last month and also won the McCain UK Cross Challenge in Cardiff.

He recently came back from the LXVII Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza in northern Spain where he won the silver medal, having been out-sprinted to the line by UK team-mate Jonathan Hay.

The other main challengers may come from Steve Benson's group at Ipswich Harriers.

From that team, Kieran Clements managed a fourth place finish at Parliament Hill, while Shaun Webb has also impressed.

"It is going to be a good race," said Lewis.

"There is a decent field and I think if Sam can run well he should think about being in that top 10 by a certain point and then see what he can achieve.

"Hopefully, if he does a good Fake Movado Watches race and is well supported by the rest of the Wellington lads in the age group, we can push up the team rankings as well."

Atkin started out at Cleethorpes AC before making the switch to Lincoln Wellington last year.

DON IMUS, HOST: This is the IMUS IN THE MORNING program.

Time now for a business update from the Fox Business Network. Here's Jenna Lee.

JENNA LEE, FBN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, everybody. Coming up on IMUS IN THE MORNING, New York Governor David Patterson will be in studio 7:30 this morning. Looking forward to that.

Now here's your Fox Business Minute. A new congressional panel will grill top banking execs today on what exactly caused the financial crisis. Executives of four big banks will be Capitol Hill. They include JP Morgan CEO Jamie Diamond, Morgan Stanley Chairman, John Mack, Bank of America's new CEO Brian Monihan and Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankman. All those men expected to testify today.

President Obama is expected to announce new bank fees tomorrow. The administration will charge banks to cover taxpayer losses on TARP. Treasury officials tell Fox News the amount will be no higher than $120 billion and likely quite a bit less than that. The administration admits it will make money on bailing out the banks.

This money will make up for what taxpayers could potentially lose on the bailouts of auto makers and AIG. Economists disagree with Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke. According to the Wall Street Journal poll, 78 percent of economists surveyed said low interest rates were at least partly to blame for causing the housing bubble.

Bernanke disagreeing saying low rates were appropriate. He blames loose regulation for the housing crisis. Of course this is relevant because we're at record low interest rates at this time. That's your Fox Business Minute.

Let's take a look at the European Markets as we head into Wednesday's session. After a down day on Wall Street yesterday, we're looking at a mixed day over in Europe. As Zenith Replica Watches far as the U.S. Dow features go, let's go ahead and take a look those. Again as we heading into the third session of the week, looking slightly positive but not a whole lot of conviction in these markets.

Commodities have been mixed most of the morning. Let's see if they stayed that way. Looks like they have, crude is down another 1 percent after closing lower by 2 percent yesterday. Gold is higher.

The Fox Business television is now on the web. Check out our web show foxbusiness.com live. Online right now and streaming on your iPhone. Head over to foxbusiness.com. IMUS IN THE MORNING coming to you next.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

IMUS: I'm surprised about Elizabeth Edwards. Dropped a hammer on poor woman battling cancer as much as I am, of course.

CHARLES MCCORD, IMUS SHOW: I was going to focus on her husband, you know who --

IMUS: He really is a creep, isn't he?

MCCORD: Yes. And I think beyond his creepiness --

IMUS: I said creep flattering.

MCCORD: I think the level of delusion -- there's a lot of crazy behavior in "Game Change." The fact that John Edwards long after he had been driven out of the race, long after his affair had been exposed and long after the child that many people believe is his had entered the world.

The fact that he still believed months after that that he could be nominated and confirmed as the attorney general of the United States under Obama is a level of delusion I think that beats anything in presidential politics and I have seen some delusion before.

THE Government has spent pounds 7million on a series of adverts warning us men are four times more likely to keel over with soaring blood pressure if they have another pint.

"More likely" than who? Men who only drink one pint? Half a pint? Nothing? Men who live in a yurt and exist on a diet of rainwater and rolex replica berries? Like the "two or three units a day" safe drinking figures these sound like guesstimates plucked from thin air with no scientific basis at all. Only one fact remains indisputably solid... the fake rolex Government, which claims to care so much about our drinking habits, thought 24-hour drinking licences were a good idea.

These days crime fiction by women dominates the bestseller charts, with novels by the likes of Patricia Cornwall and Minette Walters, selling in their millions. But when Sara Paretsky created her character VI Warshawski in the early 80s there were very few female private eyes following in the footsteps of Philip Marlowe, Sam Spade and Lew Archer."Marcia Muller had written a couple of books at that time, but really VI was the first female character to take up a space that, until then, had been totally taken by men," Sara told the Evening News."And I wanted her to compete with them directly, on her own terms.

That's why I made sure she came from a part of Chicago where girls grow up pretty quickly and pretty tough! I didn't want her to be a fantasy character like Modesty Blaise with all those slick karate moves. I wanted her to be paper bag printing a street fighter a and I sort of constructed her whole character around that."Paretsky's latest book, Hardball, is the 13th novel to feature Warshawski a played on the big screen by Kathleen Turner in a frankly disappointing movie a and her creator says it can be a struggle to keep such a long-running series fresh."It can be difficult to come up with new ideas, though I think VI's managed to evolve quite realistically over pandora charms the past 25 years. But it's not just a problem with VI a it's with the crime novel as a whole, which can be quite formulaic."It's important to keep up the momentum with action and physical engagement but, at the same time, you don't want to take that too far. I'm not a huge fan of the psychological crime novel where everything's internalised. As a reader there's just not enough going on there for me and I think a lot Chanel Replica Handbags of other readers feel the same."Hardball is a very personal work, taking a trip back in time to Chicago in the 60s, when Paretsky first arrived in Chicago, the city she is synonymous with. It follows old skeletons from the city's racially charged history, as well as haunting family secrets through four decades to the present."It's not just personal a you could even say it's self indulgent!" she said. "I arrived in Chicago in '66 and I was researching that time for a memoir and the more research I did, the more I realised how important that time of my life was."It was a very turbulent and very exciting time and it was when I came of age. I was doing community work there and we were involved in every aspect of the city from the very top right down to the streets, and the city and its story just became part of who I was.

REDLANDS - The images above the bar at the Tartan are not snapshots tacked up by decades of employees.

Replica Casio

They are a mural, painted from a collection of historic Redlands photographs.

"There's always been dead space up there and I hated it," said manager Linda Crosby. "I got the idea go to the library and get photographs and get someone to paint it."

The "someone" was Antonio Martinez, a Moreno Valley resident referred by his boss, Bill Mitchell. Both men work at the Better Business Bureau in Colton, and Mitchell has lunch at the Tartan almost daily.

"It was a bit of a challenge - I've done photo replication stuff but this is the most extensive I've done," Martinez said.

Crosby went to the Heritage Room at the A.K. Smiley Public Library and chose photos with the help of associate archivist Nathan Gonzales.

"She had a theme she was looking for," said Gonzales, a Tartan regular.

The first photo is the old Tartan building, which was in the current Tartan parking lot. Most images are street scenes and buildings around Orange Street, State Street and Redlands Boulevard.

"Old-time Redlands is so historical and I really wanted to be true to the era, and go back and preserve what once was and customers relate to that - 'Oh, I remember that,' " Crosby said.

Gonzales made photocopies, Martinez chose the photos and began painting in July, mainly on Sundays. He plans to finish this weekend.

"He's a very dedicated fellow," Mitchell said. "He's put an enormous amount of work into it and it's a really interesting conversation piece, if nothing else."

Martinez used Replica Omega Watches acrylics, standing on a ladder up to hours at a time.

"It keeps me moving when I know people have their eyes on what's going on," he said. "It was something people could watch develop, which was cool."

Crosby said regulars could tell when Martinez had been working - the Tartan is closed Sundays - and when he had not.

"(I would say) Oh, we had a family thing, he has a wife," Crosby said. "It was a lot more detail than even he thought would be, with the shading and everything."

Martinez, who never had formal art training beyond high school, has painted murals in San Bernardino and Riverside, mainly at schools and community centers. This is his first in Redlands.

"This is history being replicated people in these storefronts didn't know they'd be in this painting," he said.

He said people have told him they remember some of the buildings.

"I think it really tells a story about Redlands," Crosby said.

Fake Burett

Martinez said he picked up on some local history while working at the Tartan, which celebrates its 45th anniversary in Redlands in November.

"This Tartan is an institution - you don't find places like this anymore," said Mitchell, who lives in Riverside and used to own a business in the Redlands Mall.

Gonzales said Crosby has preserved what makes the Tartan special, and the mural adds to that.

Crosby said she would consider putting murals behind booths.<
