AS a long-standing customer of the Royal Bank of Scotland (lucky old me) I did wonder over the years why I was given such rubbish service.

Sure, my branch manager was always charming enough, but when it came to annual interest payments on my meagre savings, the lump sum was barely enough to cover a round of drinks in the pub. And that's when times were good.

Don't get me started on overdraft charges, either. A speeding fine seemed cheaper.

I know it's my fault for not seeking out a better deal but like a lot of other people in this country I naively placed my money and my trust in the RBS. It's a huge, established bank. What could possibly go wrong?

lingerie wholesale

That's why I'm angry beyond belief this week to learn how the head of RBS Sir Fred Goodwin has spent my money.

Turns out a lot of it went into his pay packet and in loans to Russian oligarchs.

Reckless gambling on the markets meant this arrogant fat-cat lost pounds 28billion over the past year. That's right, not million, but billion. This man they now call "the world's worst banker" will have the glory of going down in history for making the biggest loss of any British company EVER.

And it's not just RBS savers and shareholders who are spitting bile because of the money we've lost and the money we still could lose. Every taxpayer in the country will end up paying for his cock- ups.

wholesale sexy lingerie

Not that it worries Goodwin. Even when he was finally removed from his office by the Treasury last November, he continued to believe he was God's gift to banking.

Instead of falling down on his knees and thanking Gordon Brown for the pounds 20billion taxpayer bail-out, he described it as "more like a drive-by shooting than a negotiation".

The man they call "Fred The Shred", because of his ruthless job- cutting reputation, has never uttered a single word of apology for his own monumental failure.

He has simply skulked back to his pounds 3million Georgian mansion in Edinburgh where he can count the pounds 30million he made during his decade at RBS, safe in the knowledge that his extra pounds 8.4million pension pot will keep him in sports cars and champagne for the rest of his days.

Britain's darkest recession for 70 years is now someone else's problem. There is talk this week that Sir Fred should be stripped of his knighthood.

Who gives a monkey's about that? He and all the other megalomaniacs who ran British banks like gambling dens should be stripped of their bonuses and face trial for ruining their shareholders and misleading the markets. If this isn't white collar crime on a grand scale, then tell me, what is?

Fred The Shred's greed and arrogance is symptomatic of a gold- plated industry so removed from the real world it cannot understand why every ordinary person wants to string them up by the neck.

While thousands lose their jobs every week, homes are repossessed and small businesses go bust, the bankers who caused this catastrophe continue to rake in bonuses big enough to keep a family housed and fed for years.

This month senior executives at Northern Rock - the first bank to be bailed out with taxpayers' money - trousered pounds 2.3million in replica breitling watches bonuses. Where is the justice in that?

KITTING the women of South Wales out in fabulous lingerie is a labour of love for Wendy Collie.

Her shop Bella's Lingerie, named after her late grandmother, specialises in bridal and mastectomy lingerie as well as plenty of pretty underwear and top brands.

Wendy trained as a corsetier with Allders in Croydon 15 years ago and lost her 56-year-old mum Jeanette Lock to breast cancer 18 months ago.

"It's ironic," says Wendy, 38, whose business celebrates its tenth anniversary in August.

"Unfortunately, I've got both professional and personal experience in mastectomy lingerie."

Bella's was round the corner in High Street for eight years, before relocating to Mill Street.

"When I was in London, I hated the commute into the city," says Wendy. "I'm only 5ft 3in and didn't want my nose in someone else's armpit for years to come!

"I realised the grass isn't actually greener and came home to Wales with my passion for lingerie.

"I met my husband Chris and whenever we were out with friends or family, they were forever asking me, 'I've just bought this new dress, Wendy, now what type of bra should I be wearing with it?', so I opened the shop."

Wendy, mum to Mackenzie, seven, and Eliza Belle, four, appreciates her great regular clientele, saying: "One lady comes to us from Scotland once or twice a year. They love the personal service and seeing the same staff every time.

"I lost my way a bit after losing my mother and thought of closing, but book printing moving into a new premises allowed me to refocus. I do talks with the Women's Institute and ask them, 'If you've paid between pounds 50 and pounds 80 for a sexy lingerie china new top, why wear it with your pounds 4.99 bra from Tesco that you've had for four years and is now nice and grey?' "Good lingerie doesn't necessarily need to be expensive, but needs to be the right shape and size. Not every shape fits every bust."

Bella's holds regular charity fashion shows at Alfred's Bar and Grill in Pontypridd. This year's event is a black tie three course meal and is on Sunday, February 15.

"Cancer Care Cymru offered massive support with my mum," says Wendy. "The show started as a one-off, but we're going to do it annually now, around my mother's birthday.

"My models are my customers, so average women of average sizes."

JUST days after she was named the new face of lingerie firm Ultimo, it should come as no surprise to see her striking a pose in silk underwear and black stockings.

But the sight of Kimberly Stewart in the new advertising campaign for Specsavers could possibly to incur the wrath of Scots underwear tycoon Michelle Mone.

For in the photos, taken to publicise the search for Britain's sexiest wearer of spectacles, the daughter of veteran rocker Rod is decked out in lingerie from rival firm Agent Provocateur.

Miss Stewart reportedly said of Agent Provocateur: 'I should do their publicity for them - I wear their lingerie all the time.' The decision by 27-year-old Miss Stewart to sign for Ultimo is already thought to have caused family strife. Three years ago, Miss Mone incurred Rod's wrath when she dumped his fiancee Penny Lancaster and replaced her with his ex-wife, Rachel Hunter.

The move prompted the gravellyvoiced singer to describe the firm's boss as 'a manipulative cow'.

Against this background, Miss Stewart was said to be 'bracing herself' for her father's reaction to her latest modelling move.

COULD this be the world's smallest diamond ring?

Boro baby Alysia Sharp was presented with the tiny gift when a jeweller struggled to find a bracelet small enough for her wrist.

embroidered patches

Her parents Fiona, 33, and Charles, 38, of Berwick Hills, Middlesbrough, wanted to buy their daughter something she could keep forever so they popped into Goldfactors Family Jewellers in Linthorpe Road just days after she was born.

Owner Alan Goodchild could not find a bracelet on such a minute scale but agreed to make one specially for her in time for Christmas.

Determined the new born would not leave empty-handed he also removed a miniature ring from a charm bracelet which fitted neatly onto Alysia's finger.

"It fits perfectly on the middle finger of her hand," said Charles, a car mechanic.

"When she has got it on she holds her hand up to show it off.

"It's a little gold ring with a little diamond on it. It looks brilliant on her.

"The bloke in the shop said even footballers wives would not have anything like this."

Mr Goodchild let Alysia have the ring for free and said it was the tiniest jewellery he had ever been asked for. "I could not get it to register on the scale," he said.

replica breitling watches A DISABLED dad was gunned down in his home when an 'obsessed' love rival plotted his execution, the jury heard.

Multiple sclerosis sufferer Jeffrey Lowdon and Paul Bourn were long term friends who shared a drink together every week at their local Catholic Club, Newcastle Crown Court was told.

But lovestruck Bourn had spent more than a decade trying to win the affection of Mr Lowdon's wife Joanne the court heard.

He bought her a pounds 300 bracelet for her birthday, offered to buy her lingerie, paid off her pounds 2,000 rent arrears, and even treated her and her children to a pounds 4,000 holiday to Florida, it was claimed.

And when he saw the Lowdons get back together after a separation, Bourn decided to remove his rival for good, said Glen Gatland, prosecuting.

He recruited his brother Max Bourn who in turn brought his friend James Richardson into the scheme, the court was told.

And in the space of six months last year, 49-year-old Mr Lowdon, so frail he looks much older and walks with a stick, was targeted in two near deadly attacks.

He was ambushed after leaving the Catholic Club in Bells Close, Lemington, on March 3 and beaten so badly he was left unconscious.

Then on the evening of September 23, he was shot four times at close range as he stood in the kitchen of his home in Fernwood Road, Lemington.

"Jeffrey Lowdon did not see who shot him", Mr Gatland told the jury. "He remembers hearing three or four pops that sounded similar to fire crackers.

"He then felt excruciating pain in his stomach before falling to the ground."

Mr Lowdon survived after doctors at the Newcastle General treated him for multiple entry and exit wounds to his chest, abdomen, groin and arm.

Police later recovered the point 22 bullets from the kitchen, Mr Gatland said.

makeup brushes "One had passed through Mr Lowdon, hit the wall and ricocheted across on to a window ledge, another bullet was embedded in the front of a drawer, there was a bullet fragment under the fridge freezer and one found under the tumble dryer," Mr Gatland said.

Paul Bourn, 47, of Orchard Terrace, Lemington; Max Bourn, 37, of Scotland Gate, near Ashington; and Richardson, 27, of Gill Street, Benwell all deny conspiracy to murder and two charges of conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm.

Max Bourn alone denies attempted murder.

wholesale sexy lingerie Mr Gatland claimed Max was the gunman, even texting 'I have done it' to a friend soon after the shooting.

Paul Bourn himself had been having his usual Saturday night drink with Mr Lowdon and Joanne when the shooting happened.

He had made sure he was there to give himself an alibi, the court heard.

But he later told police he had never seen the gunman or heard any shots.

"This conspiracy starts with jealousy and obsession, continues with deceit and violence and finishes the repeated firing of a gun at an innocent man," Mr Gatland told the jury.

The trial continues today.

REDLANDS - Crashes and unexpected bursts of speed were the name of the game on the third day of the Redlands Bicycle Classic.

Returning from a tricky Beaumont Circuit Race on Friday, both the pro women and men took on the Stage 2 City of Redlands Criterium Saturday afternoon.

Weaving their way around a nerve-wracking 11 turns that took the riders in a twisty, curvy loop through downtown Redlands, Theresa Cliff-Ryan of Colavita/Baci pb Cooking Light and Bahati Foundation Pro Cycling's Hilton Clarke won the dashes to the finish line to claim first in their respective races.

For Cliff-Ryan, the victory came after nearly 60 grueling minutes of chasing HTC Columbia's Ina-Yoko Teutenberg, who separated from the pack early on and led for most of the race.

"It was basically after the only time bonus, Ina went for the sprint and we knew she wanted time," said Cliff-Ryan, who finished with a time of 57:59, just edging out teammates Jo Kiesanowski and Brooke Miller of TIBCO/To the Top Pro Cycling.

"It was jumbled for awhile, break after break, but it going Replica fendi wholesale after a little bit. Ina was obviously going for time and she was working the break. But luckily I got to sit in and wait for the sprints...and it worked out awesome."

Cliff-Ryan crossed the finish line with arms spread wide in celebration but Teutenberg may have had the bigger day.

After entering Saturday trailing Dare to Be-BMW-Bianchi's Amber Neben by 14 seconds, the defending Redlands Bicycle Classic champion captured an early time bonus and never let up.

Looking absolutely dominant as she sped past cheering fans lining Citrus Avenue, Teutenberg did not just catch Neben, who she edged out for last year's title, but actually flew by her.

When the dust settled, Teutenberg had outpaced Neben by over a minute on the day, claiming the overall lead in the general classification and the right to don the yellow jersey heading into the final day of competition.

"I was surprised by that much time," said Teutenberg about the distance between her break group and the rest of the pack, which included Neben. "The leadoff for the sprint was pretty fast and then came the counterattack and we pretty much just kept riding. I saw people were just about to close up and I thought I'd give it another try to go because everybody was tired and it was time to try and make a run again."

Teutenberg (4:15.24) will enter today with a 32-second lead over Katharine Carroll of Peanut Butter & Co. Twenty 12 (4:15.56) and a 39-second advantage over TIBCO/To the Top Pro Cycling's Rebecca Much (4:16:03).

Neben (4:16.25) dropped to seventh.

While the women's criterium was surprising for its speedy break group, the men's criterium was surprising for a completely different reason - crashes.

With over 170 riders jockeying for position for the better part of 90 minutes, the men's criterium was dotted with crashes all over the course, leaving many of its participants battered and makeup brush bloodied.

After the pack, which held together for much of the race, finally began to break apart over the final few laps, Clarke managed to out- sprint UnitedHealthcare pb Maxxis teammates Jacob Keough and Andrew Pinfold for first.

Ireland 20 Scotland 23

A FEW years back Guinness coined an advertising slogan: "Good things come to those who wait," so it was only appropriate, in the home of the black stuff, that Andy Robinson's men finally got some reward for all their hard work this season. This was only Ireland's forth loss at Croke Park and the Scots rained on their parade since Saturday was the day Irish rugby bade an emotional farewell to the old GAA ground that has served them so well these past few years.

Coming at the end of a disappointing season this fabulous win was only Scotland's second over Ireland in the extended Six Nations, with the last one occurring way in 2001 when the match that was rearranged around the foot and mouth epidemic. Scotland's only embroidered patches other recent success was a friendly match at Murrayfield ahead of the World Cup of 2007, when Eddie O'Sullivan fielded a weakened team.

Fly-half Dan Parks - you can't keep him down - won the match for Scotland with a drop goal and five penalties, the last one coming two minutes from time to seal the victory, but once again he showed his Jekyll and Hyde nature. Apart from his crucial contribution with the boot he also stripped Paul O'Connell of the ball just before half time. Against that, the Aussie still has the blinkers on in attack, ignoring overlaps and mismatches galore when Scotland had the whip hand. For all his efforts Parks remains what he always has been, a kicking stand-off, as constant as the north star, take him or leave him.

At least he held his nerve when it mattered most, which is more than his opposite number Johnathan Sexton could manage. The Irish fly-half was kicking 33 per cent ahead of this match so his two from makeup brushes four attempts can't have taken anyone by surprise yesterday. He was replaced by Ronan O'Gara immediately after his second success around the 50 minute mark.

The veteran's appearance sparked an immediate Irish fightback after the Scots had opened up a commanding ten-point lead, just as they did in Wales, and they looked like throwing it away for the second time this season. Ten minutes into the second half Sexton's second penalty narrowed the Scots' lead to seven, the Croker crowd suddenly found their voice and the Irish pack started to boss the mauls. Tommy Bowe popped up to snatch Ireland's second try after squeezing into the right hand corner, despite Sean Lamont's best efforts, and O'Gara stepped up to kick the touchline conversion. Suddenly the match was tied 17-17 apiece with the momentum firmly behind the home team.

Thankfully, the Scots had other ideas. With memories of Cardiff spurring them on, they were determined not to blow it again. Scotland won a free kick at a scrum, Lamont broke up the middle of the park and, not for the first time, the Irish were penalised at breakdown. Parks kicked the 73rd minute penalty. O'Gara responded two minutes later.

The Aussie demanded the final say. Rob Kearney collected Parks' deep kick to the corner but was penalised for holding on after being collared by Simon Danielli and Nick De Luca. Taken inches from the touchline, and amidst a chorus of jeers and whistles, Parks' strike dissected the uprights with geometric precision. It may be a while before the Australian fly-half hears anything other than the ringing of cheers at Murrayfield.

It looked a harsh call by referee Jonathan Kaplan but the South African had a huge influence on this game, all for the good. He had been brutally strict at the breakdown all match where he pinged Ireland's cheating relentlessly. Kaplan a

CAUGHT on camera, these suspects are wanted in connection with a jewellery raid on a Tyneside store.

The pair allegedly duped shop workers out of luxury gold items when they targeted a store in Byker, Newcastle.

Claiming to be interested in the purchase of Fendi Replica Handbags a number of gold chains and a gold watch, they quizzed the store owner on the items on offer.

And while one man distracted staff with questions, the other pocketed the lot.

Detectives believe the items were placed in a bag and left unattended as the store owner dealt with an enquiry from one of the men.

When they offered to pay for the jewellery with Euros, the store owner refused and said he could only accept Stirling.

After the men had left the shop, the proprietor discovered that two chains and the watch were missing.

PC Paul Denyer of Byker said: "I would urge anyone who thinks they may be able to identify either of these men, or who has any information about this theft, to get in touch with police immediately." The raid took place at the This and That jewellery store, on Shields Road in Byker, on Tuesday, October 6 last year. It was shortly after noon when the suspects entered the store on the pretence of buying a number of items.

But they left the store without handing over any cash before the owner realised he had been stung.

And now, more than three months after the incident, police have released images of two men they want to question.

Detectives are appealing to Chronicle for help with information in a bid to catch the culprits and retrieve the items. The chains are described as chunky, one in rose gold and one in yellow gold. The watch is a ladies wristwatch with a pearl or sapphire face.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Byker police on 03456 043 043 or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

So it's come to this. The City of Literature's fourth reading campaign, after Kidnapped, Jekyll And Hyde and replica balenciaga handbags The Lost World, is a selection of poems. The "Carry A Poem" idea is one that I love, especially as it moves poetry away from its slightly pious contexts. I look forward to the poems beamed on to walls, attached to flowers in St Andrew Square and fluttering around as little business cards. I've decided to keep John Berryman's Dream Songs in my bag for the month, since there's nothing that makes my journey in on the No 14 more bearable than an extended American avant-garde meditation on suicide. But I simply must protest, nay fulminate, at one of their stunts. Semi-naked ladies with poems written on their replica breitling watches backs - in a library. This is a kind of blasphemy. Libraries are sacrosanct spaces, sanctuaries from our pole-dancing and thong-wearing culture. Libraries are places where old men can think about semi-naked ladies in peace.

Brought to Booker

The Booker Prize has discovered, through the labours of the Browser's dear friend, the indefatigable Peter Straus, that it missed a year - 1970 - due to a change in the rules. So they're running a belated contest, with writers as diverse as Muriel Spark, Brian Aldiss, Ruth Rendell and Melvyn Bragg up against each other. I think they should run another competition: the Booker Mistakes Prize. Which is the best book, in the past 40 years, that they overlooked? For the long-list at least: BS Johnson, Christine Brooke-Rose, Robin Jenkins, Iain Sinclair and Angela Carter.

One helluva game

It's nearly here! I write, of course, of the computer game Dante's Inferno, loosely based on some terza-rima theological poem. "It's a highbrow/lowbrow project by design," say the programmers. "If you know the poem, the game has a lot to offer. If you just want to mash buttons and kill demons, that's all it has to be for you". But I throw down a Browserly gauntlet to Electronic Arts, the company. I want to play Purgatorio and Paradiso too. I'd much rather blast Thomas Aquinas than listen to his ontological arguments.

Blushful Hippocrene? - nope, it's the Buckie

The Scottish Poetry Library hosted "Show book printing And Tell" last week, a new soire devoted to innovative literary performance. Perhaps to indicate that they were offering something new to the jaded palates of the literati, alongside the Chateau Thames Embankment red and white wine, they had a "hot and spicy" option: never in my born days did I think I'd witness people drinking Buckfast in that auspicious building. Please enjoy poetry responsibly. It was also charming to be nearly the oldest person in the room. The readings were fantastic: Edinburgh's Gavin Inglis read one of his "Crap Ghost Stories", about the world's first online spectre, and Sam Taradash read an astonishingly accomplished piece that Raymond Carver would have envied.

Arts council tung-tied

News has reached me that the soon-to-be-wound-down Scottish Arts Council has decided to cut the funding to Lallans, the only literary magazine devoted to Scots, which has been running continuously since 1974. What adds insult to injury is the sad news that John Law, the editor, died in February and the Scots language poet William Neill died earlier this month. It transpires that the Brownsbank fellowship, based in the last home of Hugh MacDiarmid, the founder of the Scots Renaissance, is to be cut as well. So much for the "confident, cultured Scotland" the Arts Council maintains it fosters.

Political page-turners

Which party would I vote for, based solely on the selections for the Waterstone's tables put forward by William Hague, Vince Cable, Peter Mandelson and Nicola Sturgeon? That's between me and the ballot box. But it's curious to note Hague chooses Robert Harris's Lustrum (dedicated "to Peter") about spin in Roman politics. As does Mandelson. Among Sturgeon's choices, it's superb to see Willy McIlvanney's Docherty, but disappointing to see Arthur Herman's The Scottish Enlightenment, the prose equivalent of a Royal Mile Wha's Like Us tea-towel. Either Alexander Broadie or James Buchan on that topic would have been a far better choice.

A MAN at a party assaulted a passer-by who he thought had racially abused him, a court heard.

Plymouth magistrates were told Jacob Clarke punched and kicked a man on the ground.

His solicitor told the court that it was a 'terrible misunderstanding' because Clarke, aged 20, and who is black, thought the victim and his friends had racially insulted him.

Clarke, of Beechwood Avenue, Mutley, admitted assaulting the man by beating on September 11.

Magistrates fined Clarke Pounds 100 and ordered that he pay Pounds 100 compensation to his victim, Pounds 35 prosecution costs and Pounds 15 victim surcharge.

Gareth Warden, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said that the victim was one of three men passing a house in Chedworth Street in Greenbank that night.

He added that he was approached by a black man and a white man who had been standing outside the house.

Mr Warden said that the black man, Clarke, accused the passers- by of making racist comments which he assumed were directed towards him. The men denied insulting him.

Mr Warden added: "The black man hit the complainant in the face and punched and kicked him with a white man. Clip on charms They punched and kicked the complainant as he was on the ground trying to protect himself."

He said that the victim suffered cuts and bruises on his face and grazes on his back and elbow.

Julian Jefferson, for Clarke, said that he was at a house party when he went outside to speak to some friends who were smoking.

He added: "Some men approached and there appears to have been a terrible misunderstanding. Mr Clarke perceived that they were making some racially insulting comments.

If he is wrong about that he apologises.

"He apologises for what followed anyway. He should not have taken the law into his own hands physically."

PW challenges four local bartenders to create cocktails using the green fairy.

Last December, Philadelphia Distilling did something that hadn't been done on the East Coast in over 100 years. The Northeast-based boutique boozier best known for its citrusy Bluecoat gin crafted Vieux Carr锟?absinthe, a spirit that was banned in the U.S. in 1912 for the alleged psychoactive properties of wormwood, one of its primary ingrethents. (Read more on page 19.) Nearly a year later, the Chanel Replica Handbags cradle of liberty has become the cradle of the absinthe revolution. But while we imbibe absinthe with Wilde abandon at the city's best bars, la f锟絜 verte can be a bitch for the home bartender that doesn't know how to charm her.

We defer to the professionals. Below, four absinthe-minded professors guide the way with their best absinthe recipes.

Corpse Reviver #2

Colin Shearn, Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co., 112 S. 18th St. 267.467.3277. thefranklinbar.com

"I think the Corpse Reviver #2 is an ideal drink. While it uses a mere dash of absinthe, it shows just how powerful it can be. Without it, the Corpse might sit up, but it won't get up and dance. This drink is a lost classic that was recently brought back into the repertoire of any serious cocktail bar. While it is a fairly simple, straightforward drink, preciseness is a must. Especially the absinthe."

3/4 ounce gin

3/4 ounce Lillet Blanc

3/4 ounce Cointreau

3/4 ounce lemon juice (Fresh is a must!)

4-5 drops Vieux Carr锟?absinthe

Garnish: cherry (Somewhat superfluous but it looks good.)

Shake and strain into a cocktail glass.

Hot Phoebe

Christian Gaal, Noble, 2025 Sansom St. 215.568.7000. noblecookery.com

"[This is] a toddy-esque digestive winter warmer reminiscent of mulled wine, inspired by the Prohibition-era Phoebe Snow Cocktail (Savoy Cocktail Book, 1930). This is one you want on your side after failing to turn down that last slice of pie."

1 ounce Vieux Carr锟?absinthe

1 ounce Dubonnet Rouge (a French fortified wine)

1 ounce of your favorite brandy (Laird's Bonded Applejack works nicely.)

1/2 teaspoon of blossom honey

3-4 ounces of boiling water

Garnish: flamed orange peel and a pinch of grated nutmeg

Pour 1 ounce each of Vieux Carre and Dubonnet Rouge, along with your favorite brandy into an Irish coffee-like mug. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of blossom honey, topped up with boiling water. Garnish with orange peel and nutmeg.

Absinthe Martini

Katie Loeb, Oyster House, 1516 Sansom St. 215.567.7683. oysterhousephilly.com

"This drink isn't quite as dry as a true martini, but is a good way to introduce absinthe and its herbal flavors into your usual repertoire of cocktails. It makes for a very tasty and refreshing aperitif to get your appetite up before dinner."

1/2 ounce Vieux Carr锟?absinthe

2 1/2 ounce gin or vodka of your choosing

1 ounce Lillet Blanc (a French fortified wine similar to vermouth)

The loudest sounds inside Palm Beach International Airport on Sunday afternoon weren't the announcements of plane arrivals and departures, or tired children demanding attention, or weary passengers demanding a Starbucks.

They were the sounds of wheels, as rolling carry-on bags were pulled to what has been -- until now -- an airplane's free overhead bins.

For at least some major carriers, it will stay free. Under pressure from New York Sen. Charles Schumer, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, US Airways and JetBlue Airways on Sunday agreed not to follow the lead of Spirit, the Florida airline that plans to charge $45 a pop for carry-on bags.

Clip on charms The commitment comes just in time to keep travelers from running for the exits during the peak summer flying season.

"They are crazy," said Jocelyn Chin of Spirit. Standing in a crowd of New Jersey passengers waiting for checked bags at PBIA, holding her luggage with one hand, Chin responded to Spirit's fee with this suggestion: "Why not boycott them?"

The airlines could all use the extra money. Stung by higher fuel prices and February's pounding snowstorms, some of those same airlines are expected to report first-quarter losses.

But airlines were not getting much sympathy from James Wilmot, heading home to London from PBIA. "Next they'll want us to wear a flak jacket with multiple pockets," said Wilmot of Spirit's new carry-on policy. "It's outrageous."

Ushering his three children, each with their own filled knapsack, through the terminal, Brian Kennedy said baggage costs for his trip from Boston were high enough without having fees for a family's worth of carry-on bags. "It would absolutely change" travel plans, he said.

Continental, the airline the Kennedy family was using, has yet to say whether it will follow Spirit's lead.

For now, Spirit is out front -- and alone -- with carry-on fees. Spirit CEO Ben Baldanza said Sunday that his airline is moving ahead, and will start its fees in August. "We knew we took a risk with this strategy, but we believe on balance it's one that our customers will buy into," he said.

Spirit may not have the last word. Schumer and five other Democratic senators support legislation that would tax airlines if they charge carry-on bag fees.

Schumer said the legislation will move forward until it becomes clear that no airline will institute the charges.

The Associated Press contributed to this story. No fees
